Palestinian mother fears for her children as she wonders about the future after evacuating Gaza City LONDON (AP) — Najla Shawa and her family are safe for now after fleeing their home in Gaza City, but she’s worried she may never be able to return.Shawa, a Gaza native who works for the international aid group Oxfam, is sheltering with her husband, two daughters and about 50 others at a compound in Zawaida, a community just south of the area Israeli forces ordered residents to evacuate before an anticipated ground offensive. The adults are sleeping in shifts and the group is rationing food and water amid an Israeli siege that has blocked supplies from entering the Gaza Strip. But the compound has solar panels, so they have a few lights, internet service and are able to charge their phones.Aid work has stopped as Shawa and her colleagues focus on their families.“The worry is now sinking in, in a way that we need to be prepared for all scenarios,” Shawa, Oxfam’s Gaza-based country director, told The Associated Press in a video call. “There are no answers, really, because the destructio...

Drug used in diabetes treatment Mounjaro helped dieters shed 60 pounds, study finds The medicine in the diabetes drug Mounjaro helped people with obesity or who are overweight lose at least a quarter of their body weight, or about 60 pounds on average, when combined with intensive diet and exercise, a new study shows.By comparison, a group of people who also dieted and exercised, but then received dummy shots, lost weight initially but then regained some, researchers reported Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine. “This study says that if you lose weight before you start the drug, you can then add a lot more weight loss after,” said Dr. Thomas Wadden, a University of Pennsylvania obesity researcher and psychology professor who led the study. The results, which were also presented Sunday at a medical conference, confirm that the drug made by Eli Lilly & Co. has the potential to be one of the most powerful medical treatments for obesity to date, outside experts said. “Any way you slice it, it’s a quarter of your total body weight,” said Dr. Caroline A...

Why do I feel sick after getting the flu shot, COVID booster? (NEXSTAR) — Flu vaccines are available again and a new COVID booster has been released, which means there’s a good chance you’ll be getting a shot or two soon, if you haven’t already. But, maybe you’re hesitant to get either, knowing you might feel unwell afterward. Maybe you develop a headache or a fever, or maybe you feel achy and tired. Meanwhile, others who get the vaccine feel fine. Are you just very unlucky, or does this mean the vaccine is working for you but not them? Who shouldn’t get the new COVID booster? Unfortunately, there is no scientific explanation as to why some people experience side effects and others don’t, Dr. Rachel Scheraga, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at Cleveland Clinic, tells Nexstar. However, she says it’s likely the immune response triggered by the vaccine is the cause of the symptoms you may experience. How do vaccines work?Vaccines imitate the infection they’re made for, to catch the attention of your body’s natural defenses, th...

Pac-12 rewind: Great escapes, breakout performances, October regressions and title race clarity dominate Week 7 Recapping the Week 7 action across the Pac-12 …Theme of the week I: Conference clarityThe first weekend of the second half of an epic Pac-12 season did not disappoint as Stanford and Washington won thrillers, USC got exposed, Arizona showed its worth, UCLA and Washington State dropped off the top tier and Oregon State and Utah quietly rolled on. As we cross-match the current standings with the second-half schedule, one thing is abundantly clear: Each of the contenders has at least one difficult road game ahead. In our view, Oregon and UW are best equipped to navigate hostile ground.Theme of the week II: Plot twistsIn a 20-hour period, Stanford and Washington won games in which their win probability, per ESPN’s analytics, was less than 5% in the final minutes and/or overtime. (Two jaw-droppers, although the details were different.) Also, Arizona won by 38 points on the road as an eight-point underdog, and USC lost by 28 to an opponent, Notre Dame, that was coming off a lo...
