Trump Allies Are Giddy About House Intelligence Committee's Surveillance Bill

Trump Allies Are Giddy About House Intelligence Committee's Surveillance Bill In an eleventh-hour effort to preserve and expand the federal government’s warrantless surveillance powers, the House Intelligence Committee advanced a bill last week that has the full-throated support of Donald Trump’s senior law enforcement appointees. The bill, which has been described by civil liberties advocates as “the largest expansion of domestic government surveillance since the Patriot Act,” would increase federal surveillance agencies’ access to the communications of U.S. citizens with almost no federal oversight or restrictions. The federal government’s domestic spying powers come from Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, which was revamped after 9/11 to create mass data collection powers, has been routinely abused and manipulated, and is set to expire at the end of this year. While the bill’s sponsors — including House Intelligence Committee chair Rep. Mike Turner and ranking Democratic Rep. Jim Himes — have described the bill as...

Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson, NBA’s top offensive rebounder, out at least 2 months for ankle surgery NEW YORK (AP) — Mitchell Robinson will have left ankle surgery this week, leaving the New York Knicks without their starting center and the NBA’s top offensive rebounder for at least two months.Robinson was hurt Friday in a loss to Boston and the Knicks announced Monday that he would undergo the procedure this week. The team said he would be evaluated in eight to 10 weeks.Coach Tom Thibodeau said an X-ray performed in Boston didn’t show a significant injury, but the Knicks wanted to do additional testing that revealed Robinson had a stress fracture.“Tough news for him because he’s worked extremely hard and has played really, really well,” Thibodeau said before the Knicks’ game against Toronto. “But he’s tough-minded and he’ll bounce back.” Robinson’s rebounding and shot blocking have helped fuel the Knicks’ defense and his ability to chase down missed shots has given them extra possessions on offense. The 7-footer leads the league with 112 offensive rebounds (5.3 p...

Brock Purdy’s performance for the 49ers keeps silencing the skeptics SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The notion that Brock Purdy is simply a creation of coach Kyle Shanahan’s schemes and the best set of playmakers in the NFL gets put to rest the way he plays each week.Purdy delivered another stellar performance on Sunday to put San Francisco at the top of the NFC standings, throwing for a career-high 368 yards and two touchdowns to lead the 49ers to a 28-16 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.Purdy leads the NFL in passer rating (116.9), yards per attempt (9.9) and completion rate (70.2%) and is on pace for one of the most efficient seasons ever for an NFL quarterback a little more than a year after being the last pick in the NFL draft. His teammates think it’s time he gets a bigger share of the credit instead of it all going to Shanahan, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and Co. “I think a lot of people are slow to give him his props just because of his draft status and where he was drafted,” left tackle Trent Williams said. “If he was Za...

Of each year’s salary, $68 million is deferred with no interest, payable in equal installments each July 1 from 2034-43.For purposes of the luxury tax, the contract is valued as a yearly addition to the Dodgers’ payroll of about $46 million. Under the collective bargaining agreement, for the calculation of a team’s tax payroll the value of deferred money is discounted at the federal mid-term rate. For all agreements this offseason, the discounting will be at the October 2023 rate of 4.43%. Bills and coach Sean McDermott overcome their flaws to beat Chiefs and stay afloat in playoff race ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — A new week has dawned with Sean McDermott still coaching the Buffalo Bills and, in turn, his team still afloat for a playoff spot.Whether or not it’s fair to suggest one game represents a referendum on the coach or his players’ support for him, it’s apparent that McDermott and the Bills persevered through a tumultuous week. What also became clear as the Bills hung on beat the Chiefs 20-17 at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday was how similar the coach and his team really are.On Friday, an emotional McDermott acknowledged his flaws as he apologized for a clumsy anecdote he shared with his players more than four years ago, when he credited the 9/11 hijackers for their near-perfect execution of an attack that left nearly 3,000 Americans dead. The story — revealed in a lengthy article citing numerous unnamed sources and posted on the Substack page of NFL writer Tyler Dunne — fueled a fresh round of criticism of McDermott by Bills fans.On Sunday, a team with...

Man imprisoned as teen for flower shop killing is released after judge throws out his conviction BAYPORT, Minn. (AP) — A 35-year-old man who was sent to prison as a teenager for the 2004 killing of a man in a Minneapolis flower shop was set free Monday after a judge ruled the eyewitness evidence on which his conviction rested was unreliable.Marvin Haynes, who was 16 at the time of the killing and had spent most of his life behind bars, was released from prison shortly after the judge’s ruling. The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said it agreed with defense attorneys that admitting the shaky evidence violated his constitutional rights during his 2005 trial for the killing of Randy Sherer, 55, who was shot during a robbery.“I just want to thank everybody that supported me through this whole journey,” Haynes told reporters outside the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater. “And now y’all can recognize that I’m actually innocent.”Haynes later appeared at a news conference at the courthouse in Minneapolis with his attorneys, family members and Hennepin County Attor...
