Safety improvements on PCH in Malibu announced

Officials in Malibu are making safety the priority for drivers on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, announcing planned improvements to the 21-mile stretch of the roadway.  The safety upgrades come after dozens of speed-related deaths, including four Pepperdine students tragically killed in October.  California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, who was joined by other state and local leaders Monday, toured the dangerous stretch of PCH, known to many as “dead man’s curve,” where the four female students lost their lives.  “Ever since that crash, it hasn’t left my mind,” he said Monday.  According to Omishakin, safety improvements on PCH in Malibu is his top priority in the state.  Some 30 planned improvements were announced, along with a $4.2 million Caltrans contract that was approved late last week.  “Some of the speed limit signs are a little far away from the roadway and you can’t see them too visibly,” the transportation secretary said. “So, we...

(AP) — KJ Allen scored eight of his 15 points in a 10-0 run to close out overtime and Portland State rallied to beat Fresno State 75-72 on Monday night.The Vikings (9-3) yielded the first seven points in the extra period and trailed 72-65 with 2:26 remaining. Allen hit a 3-pointer and a jumper before Isaiah Johnson’s layup tied the game. Carlsbad homes targeted in recent burglaries

CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Carlsbad police are investigating at least five residential burglaries in December that all appear to have similar styles. Police say thieves are gaining access to homes through the back of homes by breaking glass windows or doors. BEIJING (AP) — An overnight earthquake killed at least 118 people in a cold and mountainous region in northwestern China, provincial officials said Tuesday, in the nation's deadliest quake in 10 years.Emergency authorities in Gansu province issued an appeal for 300 additional workers to comb through collapsed buildings and for other search and rescue operations. PARIS (AP) — A French court is expected to rule Tuesday on charges against a Rwandan doctor for his alleged role in the 1994 genocide in his home country. Prosecutors have requested a sentence of 30 years in prison.Sosthene Munyemana, 68, faces charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and complicity in such crimes.
