Time for fans of stumbling NFL teams to start dreaming about Caleb Williams coming to the rescue DENVER (AP) — The Patriots are barely better than the Panthers. The Bears are bad again. So are the Broncos, who have surrendered a half dozen premium draft picks for a coach-quarterback combo that’s just not working out.The Cardinals stink, as expected. So do the Giants, surprisingly. The Titans, Vikings, Packers and Chargers are also off to slow starts, although Green Bay and L.A. have played us five games because of early byes. Each of them can take heart on their poor start because Caleb Williams could be coming to the rescue.Notwithstanding Xavier Watts’ dominance of the defending Heisman Trophy winner in Notre Dame’s rout of USC over the weekend, we now have a big enough sample size to peg the franchises with the best chance to “ Crash for Caleb.”Heading into Week 7, there’s one winless team (Carolina, which traded it’s first-round pick next year to Chicago), five teams that have won only once — including the aforementioned Bears — and four teams that have won...

Old but more than old school, Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy shining as MLB’s oldest managers HOUSTON (AP) — When Texas rookie Evan Carter was born in 2002, Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker had been managing in the big leagues for a decade and Rangers skipper Bruce Bochy was in his eighth season. The ages of MLB managers have been declining in the last few years, with 22 under 60 at the start of the 2023 season. But in the AL Championship Series, the two oldest managers in the majors, 74-year-old Baker and 68-year-old Bochy, are leading the way.“I can brag, because I’ve made it this far in age,” Baker said. “(And) it has something to do with us, but mostly to do with your team. And the fact that the team trusts us.”“I didn’t look at it as a competition as far as old versus young, to be honest,” said Bochy, whose team leads 2-0 heading into Game 3 on Wednesday. After Baker was fired by the Nationals following a 97-win season in 2017, he wondered if he’d ever get another shot. He thought his age — and salary demands commensurate with his experience — was keeping teams a...

Macron wants an ‘amorous,’ not ‘bureaucratic’ EU enlargement process French President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to Albania on Tuesday said he wanted a more “amorous” than “bureaucratic” EU enlargement process in his bid to accelerate “the reunification of Europe.” Macron took a swipe at the “cold and bureaucratic machinery” in Brussels, saying the process of joining the EU should be more political and less technical, involving economic investments during the accession talks and better political engagement with leaders of aspiring countries.“We need to help with proofs of love. I hope that in the coming months we Europeans will find a way to reunite [our Continent],” he said alongside Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama at a press conference.Macron’s serenading in Tirana came several months after the French president signaled a French U-turn on enlargement, calling for the EU to grow and reform in the face of global instability.Questioned about France’s decision to oppose the op...
