Stock market today: Wall Street drifts higher ahead of Fed decision on rates NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are drifting higher Wednesday, as Wall Street waits to hear what the Federal Reserve’s latest economy-moving decision will be on interest rates.The S&P 500 was 0.4% higher in midday trading after riding a winning streak to its best level since April 2022. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 85 points, or 0.2%, at 34,126, as of 11:30 a.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 0.6% higher.Some stocks were making sharp moves, including drops for several health insurers after UnitedHealth Group flagged how many customers were getting knee procedures and other outpatient services done. That’s something that could raise costs for insurers, and UnitedHealth fell 7.2%. North Austin neighbors consider lawsuit against city AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A group of neighbors in the Little Walnut Creek area of north Austin said they are frustrated with the lack of communication from the city and are strongly considering a lawsuit after their homes were damaged in a flooding event. "It's easy to come here and see the damages and walk away and live your own life as the city. But we're stuck here," Dustin Grant, one of the homeowners, said. "We live this every day." Grant said his home received about $150,000 of damage. His backyard fence was pushed down by rushing flood waters, his floor had to be ripped up after three inches of water got into the house, and he is now using his camping gear as a makeshift kitchen until his house is fixed. Houston police K-9 dies from heat exhaustion HOUSTON (KXAN) -- The Houston Police Department confirmed Tuesday that one of its K-9 dogs, Aron, passed away due to heat exhaustion.Aron was a four-year-old K-9 dog who had worked with the department for one-and-a-half years. The handler left Aron in a running and air-conditioned patrol vehicle, which HPD said was a "necessary and common practice when the K-9 partner is not actively engaged in police work."Aron's police handler returned to the patrol vehicle and found the engine had shut off. Aron was taken to an emergency veterinarian clinic, where the dog ultimately died of heat exhaustion. HPD said K-9 vehicles are designed to notify the handler, sound horns and active cooling fans while rolling down the windows if the vehicle's engine turns off. The department confirmed this didn't happen in this incident, and police officials are investigating what went wrong.
